The Air Bypass
Valve is one method which Ford Motor uses to
control the r.p.m. at which the engine idles.
That is to say, when the driver is not requesting
a given engine r.p.m., the vehicle engine
computer takes control of the engine r.p.m. at
idle and establishes correct r.p.m. based on
engine load and temperature. An Air Bypass Valve consists of a
coil type solenoid directly connected to a valve
with a return spring. When no voltage is applied
to the coil, the valve is closed. When voltage is
applied the valve is fully opened. By pulse width
modulating the valve, the valve can be partially
opened. The technique is refered to as "Pulse
Width Modulation."
The Concept Technology, Inc.
Model #223 ABV Solenoid Tester is used to evaluate the ABV Solenoid sub-system. The Model
#223 allows the engine technician to evaluate the
ABV Solenid, as well as the ABV Solenoid Drive
Circuit in the vehicle engine computer. In
addition to testing the ABV Solenoid and engine
computer ABV drive, this tester can be used to
set engine r.p.m. to any desired idle speed for
cylinder balance testing, timing checks, or air
conditioning system charging.
